What is an autoimmune disease?

Rheumatoid Arthritis An autoimmune disease is a condition arising from an abnormal immune response to a normal body part. There are at least 80 types of autoimmune diseases. Nearly any body part can be involved. Common symptoms include low grade fever and feeling tired. Often symptoms come and go. Here are some of the most common types of autoimmune diseases: Ankylosing Spondylitis- This is an inflammatory arthritis, which affects the large joints and also, the spine. Sjögren's Syndrome- It's characteristic includes dry mouth and dry eyes. It is an immune system disorder. Rheumatoid Arthritis- It's a chronic inflammatory disorder which affects many joints, including those in the hands and feet.  Lupus- This inflammatory disease is caused when the immune system attacks its own tissues. Alopecia Areata-  Sudden hair loss that starts with one or more circular bald patches that may overlap. How common are autoimmune diseases? Overall, autoimmune disease
